dorothy
A sweet, innocent young lady who has a streak of boldness and is the hero of our story. She lives on a farm with her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry but dreams of escaping to a far-off place where she does not get into so much trouble. She and her dog, Toto, are inseparable. At certain points, Dorothy will need to operate a hand puppet of Toto, whilst also acting herself which will take a lot of practice and focus. She is a bit outspoken and headstrong, but dearly loves her family and friends. Dorothy needs to be a strong vocalist and a good dancer and requires an actor who is eager to embrace the challenge of playing such an iconic role.
Monologue

But don’t you see, I did leave… that’s just it. I didn’t mean to, but I did. And I kept trying to get back… for days and days, or at least it felt like that. At first I thought maybe it was all a dream. Only… it wasn’t. It was a real place. Truly real. And oh, it was the strangest place you ever did see. There were people there—good people—who helped me, and needed me too. And I remember thinking… even when things weren’t very nice… that I had to keep going. Because if I didn’t, I might never see home again. And that was all I wanted. Just to be back. With the people I love.
Funny thing is… I met friends along the way who didn’t think they had what they needed. A brain, or a heart, or courage. But they had it all along. I know they did. And I suppose… I found something too. Because when I finally came back… and saw everything just as it was… I realised I’d been wishing for the wrong thing all along. There isn’t anywhere better. Not really. Because if you have people who love you… and a place to belong… Well… there’s no place like home.
