The wizard

The Wizard of Oz is charismatic, theatrical and larger than life, presenting himself as an all-powerful ruler through smoke, spectacle and confidence. When he is playing the mysterious Oz's Voice, he should sound strong and commanding, but should also be able to shift seamlessly into a more blustering and flustered character when discovered. This role has a great deal of dialogue to memorize, especially in the final scene in Oz with a series of long monologues.

Monologue

Learn this monologue for any of the role of Glinda.

I am Oz, the great and powerful. Who are you? Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain…Oh dear. Well, I better give you what you wanted.

Why, Scarecrow anybody can have a brain. Back where I come from we have universities, where men go to become great thinkers. And they have no more brains than you. But! They have one thing you haven’t got! A diploma.

As for you my fine Lion friend, you are under the delusion that you have no courage. Back where I come from we have men who are called heroes. And they have no more courage than you have. But! They have one thing you haven’t got! A medal!
As for you my galvanized Tin friend. You want a heart. Back where I come from there are men who do nothing all day but good deeds. And their hearts are no bigger than yours. But! They have one thing you haven’t got. A testimonial! And remember, a heart is not judged by how much you love, but by how much you are loved by others.

Lyrics

Ha - ha - ha, ho - ho - ho - And a couple of tra - la - las

That's how we laugh the day away, in the Merry Old Land of Oz!

Bzz - bzz - bzz, chirp - chirp - chirp - and a couple of la - di - das

That's how the crickets crick all day, in the Merry Old Land of Oz!

We get up at twelve and start to work at one.

Take an hour for lunch and then at two we're done.

Jolly good fun!

Ha - ha - ha, ho - ho - ho - And a couple of tra - la - las

That's how we laugh the day away, In the Merry Old Land of Oz!
