Lion
The Cowardly Lion is bold in appearance but anxious at heart, convinced he lacks the courage a lion should naturally possess. Larger-than-life, dramatic and often hilariously overreactive, he brings energy and comic flair to the journey. Beneath the bluster, however, is a sensitive soul who longs to be brave and do the right thing. The role should combine strong comic timing with warmth, vulnerability and nobility.
Monologue
Learn this monologue for the role of Tin Man.
Put ’em up! Put ’em up! I’ll fight you with one paw tied behind my back! I’ll fight you standing on one foot. I’ll fight you with my eyes closed. Oh… oh dear. Why did I say that?
That’s the trouble with me. I can roar and growl and swish my tail and for a minute or two I look like the bravest lion that ever lived. But then somebody squeaks, or a branch snaps, or a witch cackles, and all at once my knees begin knocking and my tail starts doing things entirely on its own.
When I met Dorothy Gale and her friends, I tried to frighten them. Instead, Dorothy took one look at me and knew exactly what was wrong. So I went along to the Emerald City to ask the Wizard for courage. And I was scared nearly every step of the way.
But whenever Dorothy or the Scarecrow or the Tin Man needed me, somehow I found myself stepping forward before I had time to be afraid. And somewhere along the Yellow Brick Road, I discovered that having good friends can make even a cowardly lion feel brave.

Lyrics
If I were king of the forest
Not queen, not duke, not prince
My regal robes of the forest
Would be satin, and not cotton, and not chintz
I'd command each thing, be it fish or fowl
With a woof and a woof and a royal growl
As I'd click my heel, all the trees would kneel!
And the mountains bow and the bulls kowtow!
And the sparrow would take wing
If I, if I, were king!
