Scarecrow
Scarecrow is a lovable character who believes he is sadly lacking in brains. In truth, he is imaginative, resourceful and often the first to come up with clever solutions when challenges arise. Endearingly awkward in movement and full of comic charm, Scarecrow brings warmth, humour and heart to Dorothy’s journey. He should be playful and expressive, with a childlike optimism and an eagerness to prove himself. Beneath the floppy limbs and light-hearted silliness is a loyal friend whose intelligence shines through long before he realises it himself.
Monologue

Well I don’t quite know which way to go. That way looks nice enough and that way looks nice too. You see, I can’t really make up my mind. I haven’t got a brain. Just straw. That’s all there is up there. Funny thing is though I do an awful lot of talking. Words just sort of happen. Out they come. Sometimes I even surprise myself with them. Not that I understand them afterwards.
When I first met Dorothy I thought she was just passing by, but she stopped and talked to me, which is more than most crows ever did. And then I was climbing down from my pole and walking along a yellow brick road. And I keep thinking how can I be talking like this if there’s nothing in my head to tell me what to say. Although I suppose if I did have a brain I might have been too sensible to go with Dorothy at all. But then I would never have met the Tin Man or the Lion. And I’ve decided that even if my head is full of nothing but stuffing, as long as I’m with them, I at least know I’ve got friends.

Lyrics
I could while away the hours, conferrin' with the flowers,
Consulting with the rain;
And my head I'd be a scratchin', while my thoughts are busy hatchin'
If I only had a brain.
I'd unravel ev'ry riddle for every individdle
In trouble or in pain
With the thoughts I’ll be thinkin', I could be another Lincoln
If I only had a brain.
Oh, I, could tell you why
The ocean’s near the shore
I could think of things I'd never thunk before,
And then I'd sit and think some more.
I would not be just a muffin', my head all full of stuffin',
My heart all full of pain;
And perhaps I'd deserve you, and be even worthy erv ya
If I only had a brain.
